Cost of ageism
The highest award for injury to feelings on the grounds of age discrimination, around $75,000 (NZ), has been made in the UK to a female radiologist with 38 years experience. She was refused a post in a restructuring at the Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust despite the fact that the new post was almost identical to the role she had carried out for 16 years. Her manager had commented on her age, realising she was to due to retire in three year’s time. Financial loss is still to be assessed.
