Gender disparity still wide
Gender segregation persists in the Modern Apprenticeships scheme, according to the latest statistics for the first quarter 2009. The big three industries that dominate the Modern Apprenticeship scheme remain overwhelmingly male. Building and construction has 2,271 Modern Apprentices and only 7 of them are women; motor engineering has 1,724 Modern Apprentices and 48 are women, while engineering has 1,654 with 16 women. Hairdressing remains the only industry classification that has more women at 389 and 27 men.
