Public sector employers use the term Position in Range to show where a person’s salary is located on the range of rates for the job. Employers in other sectors may use different terminology, such as salary scales. Many employers set a starting salary for a job of between 80%-90% of the rate for the job on the assumption that new appointees are learning the job. They should progress within a reasonable time to at least 100% as they become fully competent. There should normally be no gender difference in average position in range.
